Global Competency Certificate Workshop Series
UB students, earn a Global Competency Certificate!
Participate in all three of the Global Competency Workshops listed below. All workshops will be held in the Intercultural and Diversity Center, suite 240 Student Union on Wednesdays from 1 pm to 2 pm. (All three workshops can also be used towards completing the requirements for the Leadership Certificate offered through the Center for Student Leadership and Community Engagement (CSLCE).)
Global Competency can be defined as possessing the knowledge, skills and awareness that enable individuals to interact successfully and respectfully with people of different cultures, experiences, viewpoints, and values. Globally competent individuals have a grasp of global systems and global issues and how these issues are interrelated and interconnected. We will be focusing on three essential areas for student success in this series of three workshops which include:
- Developing an Internationalist Skills Set
- Comfort with Dissonance
- Multicultural Competence: Communicating Through Action

Global Competency Workshop #1 - Developing an Internationalist Skills Set
9/16/09, 1 - 2 pm
Are you aware of the extent that diversity affects UB? How mindful are you of your reaction to difference? How do you understand diversity? This workshop will examine the foundations of diversity and explore how cultural background impacts an individual’s perceptions about difference as well how to begin to develop an Internationalist Skills Set which includes:- Developing intercultural communication skills
- Learning to listen through listening and observing
- Thriving in multicultural settings with a diverse range of personalities and learning styles.
- Learning to work effectively as part of a multicultural/multinational team.

Global Competency Workshop #2 - Comfort with Dissonance
10/7/09, 1 - 2 pm
How comfortable are you with dissonance? We will explore how to manage change, and how to become more comfortable with the idea that not all situations and issues surrounding diversity will be harmonious and free of conflict. We will begin to develop a skills set that will enable us to:- Adapt and be more flexible in new and changing situations.
- Handle difficult dialogue and situations surrounding difference.
- Become resourceful in new and challenging environments.
- Function well in multiple, dissonant environments.

Global Competency Workshop #3 - Multicultural Competence: Communicating Through Action
11/4/09, 1 - 2 pm
In this final workshop, we will explore how to put the concept of Global Competency into everyday actions. Each participant will create an action plan to assist in his/her ongoing development as a multicultural / globally competent individual. We will begin to develop a skills set that includes:- How to be an effective and cooperative team player who also works well independently
- How to take more initiative and risks
- Communicating despite barriers
- Understanding how cultural differences and similarities impact peoples' perceptions of diversity
- Developing cross-cultural communication skills
